About Us

Grace Tinsley
Why honor Grace Tinsley's memory with a scholarship?

Grace Tinsley devoted a large part of her life to community service, especially the education of its young people.  Many of her accomplishments focused on education, including serving on the boards of the Minor/Preston Educational Fund, Piedmont Virginia Community College, Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center, Charlottesville Public Schools Health Advisory Board, and the Jefferson School.  She was the first African American woman to sit on the Charlottesville School Board.
Perhaps her daughter’s words best describe Grace, and those we award with scholarships: courage, problem solving ability, perseverance, inspiration, and dedication to making the community better.
Recognizing outstanding young leaders helps to keep Grace’s legacy alive and makes college more affordable for talented high school seniors.
